Kumihimo is a traditional Japanese braiding technique that involves interlacing threads in a specific pattern to create beautiful and intricate designs. It's origin dates back to the 5th century. The word kumihimo translates to "braiding together cords". The technique involves using a special cord guide, called a marudai, to interlace threads into a complex pattern. Kumihimo can be used to create bracelets, necklaces, keychains, and other decorative items. In addition to the traditional Japanese kumihimo technique, there are also simpler modern versions that are often used for hobby purposes. Kumihimo is a creative and enjoyable activity that allows us to make beautiful and unique pieces of jewelry.
I have developed an EXCEL VBA macro that allows you to create kumihimo patterns using a userform. The macro provides flexibility to vary the number and color of threads. With this macro, you can easily generate your own unique kumihimo patterns and experiment with different color combinations. As a personal example, I used this macro to create a flower-patterned bracelet for my daughter. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced kumihimo braider, this macro can help enhance your creative process and make designing new patterns more fun and accessible.
The Excel file containing the macro can be downloaded from the following link. Once downloaded, the macro can be launched by clicking a designated control button on the worksheet. It is important to note that before using the macro, you will need to enable macro execution in Excel settings. By following these steps, you can safely use the macro to create beautiful kumihimo patterns and unleash your creativity!
The macro is based on Andy Pope's "Drawing on userform" class module and module, which I have modified to suit the kumihimo pattern creation process. The macro is compatible with Excel 2000 and later versions. The original "Drawing on userform" module provides a powerful and flexible framework for creating custom userforms and graphics, and I highly recommend checking it out for other VBA projects.
Please note that in some instances, the drawings on the userform may not load properly. This issue appears to be related to VBA 7.0 version. To help mitigate this issue, we have added a button to the userform that will simply redraw the kumihimo pattern. If you encounter any issues with the graphics not loading correctly, please try clicking this button to refresh the pattern.
